Shan Sun (Sei-Yu)

Each Sogetsu student is given a ‘flower name’ when receiving their first teacher’s certificate. My “flower name” is 靜優 (Sei-Yu), which means “quiet excellence”.

I am member of the Sogetsu Teacher’s Association of Japan, and member of Australian Sogetsu Teacher’s Association (NSW).

Nature never ceases to astound me. Each time I observe a single flower, leaf, or branch, I am filled with gratitude for the sheer wonder of creation. Engaging in Ikebana has a profound effect on my state of mind, calming the incessant chatter of my thoughts. There’s a deep satisfaction in knowing that my creations have the power to inspire others to pause, to slow down, and to rediscover the beauty inherent in nature.

My journey into Ikebana began with my first lesson alongside Sandy (Sandra Marker) in 2019. I vividly recall the awe I felt upon witnessing the inspiring creations of Sandy and her students at her Turramurra studio. Under Sandy’s tutelage, I’ve not only mastered the technical aspects of “highlighting the beauty of nature” but also delved into the spiritual essence of Ikebana. Sandy’s guidance and unwavering encouragement have nurtured my connection with nature, art, and beauty, ultimately fostering a deeper connection with myself through Ikebana.

Transitioning from a novice to a certified Grade 4 Sogetsu school teacher, Ikebana has granted me a newfound appreciation for the marvels of nature.
